The Gallery in the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building is the setting here, a long upper-level space in the building that opened in 1897 as the library's main home. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative in the years around 1918 to 1920, when the building drew steady crowds of visitors and scholars. Its ornate architectural sculpture and decoration were a deliberate showcase of American craftsmanship, and the glass plate preserves those details with fine clarity. Expect some streaks and faint blemishes, which come from the aging of the original coating rather than from the photographer's work.
