This print takes its title, "Nankin Oroshiya," from the two foreign groups it shows: Chinese, or "Nankin," and Russian, or "Oroshiya." It is one of the Yokohama woodcuts that appeared after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859, when Western and Chinese residents and visitors became a popular subject for printmakers in the city. The signature credits the design to Hiroshige, though the record gives the artist as Ando Hiroshige II, and the engraver is listed as Matsushima Seikichi. The seal date corresponds to 1860, and the print is a useful record of how contemporary Japanese artists portrayed these newcomers.
