Taken from the summit of Round Knob in North Carolina, this panorama looks out across the Blue Ridge, with ridge after ridge receding toward the horizon. Herbert W. Pelton registered the image for copyright around 1911 or 1912, when scenic views of the Southern Appalachians were in wide demand for postcards, illustrated booklets, and travel promotion. The wide format was meant to convey the sweep of the range, and the print shows how photographers of the period tried to capture the scale of the mountains rather than a single peak.
