The French Broad is one of the oldest rivers in North America, and geologists believe it cut its course before the surrounding mountains rose, which lets it run straight through gaps in the Blue Ridge rather than around them. It flows north through the Asheville area and into Tennessee, where it joins the Holston River at Knoxville to form the Tennessee River. Its name is thought to date to the 1700s, when French traders and explorers worked the region, and the broad, slow-moving stretches around Asheville made it a natural route for travelers, mill builders and early settlers. Views of the river often show how the valley's farms and small towns grew up along its banks.
