A Scene on the French Broad takes its subject from one of the most unusual rivers in the eastern United States. The French Broad rises in the mountains of western North Carolina and flows northwest, crossing the Blue Ridge and passing through the valley around Asheville before it reaches Tennessee. Geologists consider it one of the oldest rivers in the world, and its path predates the mountains it cuts through. Views of the river like this one were popular with travelers and artists in the 19th century, when the valley was becoming known for its scenery and mountain resorts.
