Shown at dusk, the road to the cliff is what sets this view apart from the usual scenic overlooks of the Lovers' Leap name. Many places in the United States carry this title, and most attach a romantic legend of a couple who jumped to their deaths rather than be parted, though such stories were often polished for tourists after the names were already in use. The night approach suggests a dramatic, almost theatrical mood, typical of the way nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artists and postcard makers treated rugged North Carolina scenery. Look at how the darkness frames the rock face and the path leading toward it.
