Mountain Island is a wooded island on the Catawba River, just west of Charlotte, and the rapids in this view show the river before its waters were held back. The shoals that once broke around the island were a familiar feature of the Catawba, which drops steadily through the Piedmont toward the coastal plain. In the 1920s, power companies dammed the river to create reservoirs for hydroelectric generation, and the rising water eventually covered much of this rocky stretch. The picture records a landscape that changed quickly once the river became a source of electricity for the growing region.
