The Great Smoky Mountains, which straddle the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, take their name from the bluish haze that hangs over the ridges, a effect created by moisture and vegetation releasing oils into the air. Much of the range was protected as a national park in 1934, after decades of logging had stripped many slopes, and the park later became one of the most visited in the United States. Views like this one capture the long, layered ridgelines that give the region its character, and they show why the area drew both loggers and, later, the tourists and conservationists who helped save it.
