Paint Rock stands on a bluff above the French Broad River in Madison County, where earlier Native peoples painted figures and symbols in red pigment on its face long before European settlers reached the valley. The paintings have weathered over the centuries, and many of the figures are now faint or gone. The river itself shaped the site, serving as a route and a landmark for travelers through the mountains. Pictographs like these are among the few direct records of the region's earlier inhabitants, which is why they remain important to historians and to the communities whose ancestors made them.
