Chimney Rock is a granite monolith that rises above Hickory-Nut Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, and it is the feature this view centers on. The gap is a steep, forested valley southeast of Asheville, and the rock's tall, column-like profile made it a landmark long before tourism arrived. In the late 1800s, visitors reached the summit by stairs and ladders that were cut into the cliff, turning the rock into one of the region's earliest attractions. Its dramatic setting explains why it drew painters and photographers to the area.
