Few places in western North Carolina show the influence of a river as clearly as the bottomland along the French Broad, where a farm sits on flat ground the water built up over centuries. The French Broad is among the oldest rivers in the world, and settlers prized its floodplains because the silt left by seasonal floods kept the soil rich for corn, hay and vegetables. Farms like this one were the backbone of mountain life for generations, and the scene records a working landscape that changed as roads, dams and towns spread along the river.
