Reems Creek, in Buncombe County near Weaverville, is a waterway that powered small grist and lumber mills in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when water wheels were the main source of power for rural milling across the Southern Appalachians. A mill on this stream would have served nearby farms, grinding corn and wheat for families who depended on the miller's labor and the reliability of the creek's flow. Mills like this one were often the social center of a small community, where farmers waited their turn and exchanged news. Notice how the building sits against the water, since its location was chosen to make the most of the current.
