The record for this black-and-white woodcut tags it with American visitors and ships in Japan, a pairing that sits oddly beside its comic verse theme and is worth noting. The title, *Odoke sanjuroku kasen*, means "parodies of the thirty-six master poets," a canonical group of classical Japanese poets. Mock versions of their verses, with humorous twists on familiar themes, were popular in Edo-period Japan among townspeople who enjoyed clever wordplay. The print is attributed to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dated 1800.
