Titled *Amerikatsujin*, or "Americans," this black-and-white woodcut stands out for its subject: foreign visitors and military men from the United States, at a time when Japanese viewers had little direct contact with Americans. For most of the Edo period, the shogunate confined foreign trade largely to the Dutch and Chinese at Nagasaki, so printed images of Americans were rare and likely drew on secondhand reports. The engraver, Matsushima Seikichi, cut the block on hōsho paper. The record notes that the accompanying text may be by Kōtaku Kioro, a detail worth weighing when considering the print's date and purpose.
