Foreign visitors seated at a sukiya, or tea house, in Tokyo are the focus of this color woodcut from Kanagaki Robun's series *Thirty-six Amusements in Tokyo*, dated 1872. Robun was a writer who also made illustrated humor, and he produced the series in the early Meiji period, when Tokyo was adjusting to foreign residents and visitors after Japan opened to trade. Scenes of eating and drinking at such venues reflect the wider public curiosity about these newcomers and their habits. The print's color and lively detail make it a useful record of that encounter.
