Few jobs on the Central Pacific's Sierra Nevada line mattered more than keeping the track clear, and this stereograph shows the snow plow built for that work. Winter storms in the high mountains could bury the rails under deep drifts, so crews relied on heavy plows fitted to the front of locomotives to force a path through. The card was issued by a Sacramento studio in the late 1860s, while the railroad was pushing east over the range, and it belongs to a numbered series documenting scenes along the line. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merge into a single three-dimensional view of the machinery.
