Unlike most farm scenes, this engraving is a plan, a layout of a farmyard set out in overhead view and captioned "Venerate the Plow." It appeared in the October 1786 issue of *The Columbian Magazine*, a Philadelphia monthly of essays, news and miscellany, and it sits opposite page 77. In the 1780s, many Americans regarded farming as the foundation of the new nation's prosperity, and the magazine's illustrations often reflected that faith in better husbandry. Its engraver's initials, J.T., are the only maker's mark in the record.
