This stereograph shows a snow plow of the Central Pacific Railroad near Cisco, a station on the company's line over the Sierra Nevada in Placer County, California. The view is one half of a pair issued in the Gems of California Scenery series, and the Library of Congress holds only this half. The railroad's mountain crossing was among the hardest stretches of track in the country, where winter storms could bury the line under deep drifts and avalanches. Plows like this one, pushed by locomotives, were central to keeping trains moving through the snow. The record's identifying details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
