A Chinese farmer guides a wooden plow pulled by donkeys through a field, a scene that stands out among the machinery usually shown in farm-equipment collections. The card is a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a hand stereoscope so two nearly identical images merge into one three-dimensional scene. H.C. White of North Bennington, Vermont, issued it around 1907 as part of its series of views for home and school audiences. Such cards gave American viewers a glimpse of rural China, where animal-drawn wooden implements were still common.
