William Phillips's steam plow, photographed near Belpre, Kansas, around 1910, shows one of the large traction engines that broke the tough prairie sod. Such machines pulled gangs of plows faster than teams of horses could, but they burned coal or wood, needed a steady supply of water, and required skilled operators to keep them running. The photograph was copyrighted by W.O. Durstine, and its catalog details are old and unverified, so the exact date and setting are best treated as approximate.
