A Caterpillar tractor hauling carts of freshly cut sugar cane toward the nearest railroad spur is the particular scene here, a reminder of how the crop got from field to mill in mid-century Central America. Tracked tractors were favored on wet, soft ground where wheeled vehicles would bog down, and the cane carts stacked high with stalks show the heavy, repeated labor of the harvest. The photograph dates to July 1948, when rail spurs still carried much of the region's cane to processing plants. Its place in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of agricultural transport in that period.
