Rather than a farm machine, this picture shows an airplane: the record describes a Burgess-Curtis aircraft fitted with a 100 horsepower Renault engine and delivered to the Army on Oct. 21, 1913. The word "tractor" in its title refers to a propeller mounted at the front of the airframe, which pulled the machine through the air. The Burgess Company of Massachusetts had partnered with aviator Glenn Curtis by 1911, and military sales like this one were among the earliest government purchases of American aircraft. The later "Army Air Service" label reflects how the service was renamed after its first planes were bought.
