Few pictures on this board show the military side of agricultural machinery, and this 1918 glass negative from the Harris & Ewing Collection records a U.S. Army artillery tractor, a vehicle built to pull heavy guns across rough ground where horses and wagons struggled. Tractors of this kind were adapted for wartime use during the First World War, when the Army needed engines that could haul artillery pieces and supplies through mud and shell-cratered terrain. The Harris & Ewing studio, based in Washington, D.C., photographed a wide range of government subjects, and its glass negatives preserve much of the period's official record. The caption is unverified, so the exact model and location remain uncertain.
