Few pictures on this board capture the military side of farm machinery as directly as this 1918 glass negative of a U.S. Army artillery tractor. The record is thin: the title comes from caption data of uncertain origin, so the exact unit, location and model are not confirmed. What the image does show is one of the heavy tractors the Army used to haul large guns during the First World War, when motorized traction was replacing horses for moving artillery. The Harris & Ewing studio, a Washington, D.C. firm, made the negative, and its collection is valued for documenting the capital and public life of the period.
