Titled *The old farm house*, this Currier & Ives lithograph, published in New York around 1872, depicts a rural dwelling rather than the machinery its gallery heading suggests. The firm produced large numbers of country scenes like this for a broad middle-class public that wanted images of rural life. Printed in quantity, such lithographs were often sold inexpensively, and this one is cataloged in the 1983 Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work. It is worth noticing as a record of how the farmhouse was pictured as a homely ideal before mechanized farming changed the American landscape.
