Perched on bluffs above the Mississippi River, Natchez was among the wealthiest cotton-trading towns in the country by 1840, and this view records how it appeared to an artist working that year. The picture survives as a later reproduction, made sometime between 1900 and 1940, when interest in antebellum river towns was growing. Its value lies in the cityscape detail: the waterfront, the streets rising from the river, and the built environment that merchants and planters had shaped in the decades before the Civil War. The town also sits at the southwestern end of the Natchez Trace, the old overland route now preserved as the Natchez Trace Parkway.
