Set on a rise in downtown Jackson, the Old Capitol served as Mississippi's seat of government from 1821 until the new capitol opened in 1903. William Nichols designed its Greek Revival form in the late 1830s, and Union troops occupied the city during the Civil War, leaving the building scarred but standing. By the time this photograph was made, between 1900 and 1920, the old statehouse no longer housed lawmakers and had shifted to other state uses. Today it survives as a museum and a National Historic Landmark.
