Rather than a view of a single house or street, this drawing maps the whole town of Natchez, Mississippi, with its buildings labeled so viewers can match each structure to its name. Natchez sits on a bluff above the Mississippi River, was settled by the French in the early 1700s, and grew into one of the wealthiest cotton centers in the South, a prosperity still visible in the grand houses that dot its streets. As the southwestern end of the Natchez Trace, the old overland route from Nashville, the town also served as a destination for travelers who had come down that road.
