Among Civil War battle views, this one stands out for naming the three regiments whose charge it depicts: the 17th Iowa, 80th Ohio and 10th Missouri. Jackson was Mississippi's state capital, and Union forces under William T. Sherman took the city in mid-May 1863 during the campaign against Vicksburg, after Confederate troops under Joseph E. Johnston withdrew. The scene was sketched by A.E. Mathews of the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and the Cincinnati firm Middleton, Strobridge & Co. turned that sketch into a lithograph around 1863. Prints like this gave readers at home a visual account of battles they had otherwise known only from newspaper reports.
