This 1895 color lithograph ties a Mississippi River steamboat to the cotton plantations along its banks, and its catalog entry also lists maps among its subjects. Designed and copyrighted by M.P. Levyeau in Boston, it was printed by the Heliotype Printing Co., and its heading reads "Should old acquaintance be forgot," followed by a line of compliments. By the 1890s, steamboats still carried cotton and freight along the Mississippi, though railroads were steadily taking over that work. The record also tags African Americans as a subject, a reminder of how heavily the Southern river economy depended on Black labor.
