Millsaps College, a Methodist-affiliated liberal arts school named for Reuben Webster Millsaps, a Jackson banker who helped fund it, had been operating in the state capital for about two decades by 1910. Jackson was a small city then, its economy tied to government offices, retail trade, and the cotton and timber wealth of the surrounding countryside, with rail lines carrying goods and passengers in and out. Mississippi in the early twentieth century was still deeply shaped by its agricultural economy and by the segregation laws that were tightening across the South. For Jackson residents, the college was a source of local pride and a place where young men from farm families and town households could prepare for teaching, the ministry, law, and business.
