Jackson, Mississippi, in 1910 was a modest river-and-rail city of about 20,000 people, serving as the state capital and drawing much of its daily life from government offices, merchants, and the trains that crossed the town. The Illinois Central line ran through the city, carrying cotton, timber, and farm goods out of the Delta and the surrounding countryside, while the state government kept a steady flow of legislators, clerks, and lobbyists in town. The new State Capitol, completed in 1903, anchored the downtown and gave residents a sense that their city was the seat of Mississippi's public affairs. Millsaps College, a Methodist school founded in 1890 on a hill above the city, added a small academic community to the mix. Those who lived there would have known Jackson first as the capital and as a railroad stop.
