Mississippi A. & M. College in Starkville was the state's land-grant school in 1914, founded in 1878 to teach agriculture and the mechanical arts to young white men. Students drilled as cadets in a required military program, and the campus was the town's largest institution, with its daily rhythm set by class bells and drill periods. Starkville sat in the farming country of the Black Prairie, where cotton and livestock drove the local economy, and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad brought students and supplies into town. Graduates were expected to carry scientific farming methods back to county farms and into new jobs in engineering and public works. Across the state, the campus was known as the place that trained the men who would run its farms and build its roads and utilities.
