The view is of the riverfront landing at Natchez, the low ground below the bluff where steamboats tied up, rather than the town on the heights above. For much of the 19th century the landing was the commercial center of the river trade, with cotton, freight and passengers moving on and off the boats. The district at its base, known as Under-the-Hill, had a reputation for saloons and rough waterfront life. The Natchez Trace, the old overland route that ended at Natchez, carried travelers and goods to these same bluffs, which is why the Parkway's history runs through the town.
