Natchez's ferry landing, photographed on April 27, 1927, shows the river town at the height of the Great Mississippi Flood of that spring. The print is a gelatin silver photograph from an album of high-water pictures, and the subject headings file it under disasters and floods, with the landing itself as the focus. The 1927 flood was one of the most destructive in the nation's history, inundating vast stretches of the lower Mississippi Valley and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Images like this one record how river traffic, the wharves and the riverfront were disrupted as the water rose.
