Set along the Natchez Trace Parkway, this stone monument points to two layers of history that meet on the route. The Trace was worn into the land by Native travelers over generations, and later carried settlers, traders and mail riders between the Mississippi River and Nashville. The Chickasaw, whose homelands covered much of present-day northern Mississippi and western Tennessee, were central to that history and to the treaties that opened the region to American settlement in the early 1800s. The National Park Service now manages the parkway and interprets that longer story along its length.
