Dolls, women in fine kimono, and a spread of food set this woodcut apart as a scene of the doll festival. Held each March and later called Hinamatsuri or Girls' Day, the celebration centered on tiered displays of dolls and sweet rice drinks, offered in hopes of healthy daughters. The record dates the scene to 1720, yet the engraver, Koizumi Minokichi, lived from 1833 to 1906, so the date most likely refers to the period depicted rather than the year the block was cut.
