The title names a particular structure, an iron bridge at Higashibori in Naniwa, the old name for Osaka. Iron bridges were a novelty in Japanese cities, and in the decades after the country opened to Western trade, they signaled modern engineering in a city known for its canals and wooden crossings. The record dates the print to 1850, but its subject headings run through 1900, so the scene may belong to the later Meiji period. The engraver, Koizumi Minokichi (1833-1906), was a woodblock artist active in those years, and the print's color and cut lines show how this traditional medium recorded the changing city.
