What sets these two woodcuts apart is their focus on women in a rural setting, a theme far less common than the city beauties that dominate Edo-period prints. The record dates the design to 1720, early in the Kyoho era, when ukiyo-e artists were producing many images of fashionable women. The engraver, Koizumi Minokichi, lived from 1833 to 1906, so this impression was likely cut in the Meiji period as a later rendering of an older design. That gap is worth noticing, because it shows how woodblock traditions continued long after the original prints first appeared.
