This 1795 map presents Tennessee as a government unit carved from North Carolina's western lands, a region that North Carolina had ceded to the federal government in 1790. The area then became the Southwest Territory under governor William Blount, and it was admitted as a state in 1796. The Great Smoky Mountains lie along the modern border between Tennessee and North Carolina, in the eastern part of the country the sheet describes, so the map offers a view of how that boundary was understood just before statehood.
