This hand-colored map of North Carolina from 1814 is set apart by its inset of the state's Western Parts, the mountainous country where the Great Smoky Mountains rise along the Tennessee border. In 1814 that region was still thinly settled and only partly surveyed, and much of its land remained Cherokee territory, so mapmakers of the period often drew its ridges and valleys from limited information. The inset shows how central the western counties were becoming to the state's growth, even as the boundaries of Cherokee land were still being negotiated.
