Logging was reshaping the mountains of western North Carolina when this 1909 view of forest conditions was made, showing the cutover land that timber companies left behind. Stripped slopes and stumps like these were common across the region in the early 1900s, as railroads and band saws pushed lumber operations deep into coves that had once been difficult to reach. The scene helps explain why the land that would become Great Smoky Mountains National Park was so contested. Conservationists who later fought for the park were responding in part to images like this one, which recorded how much of the old forest had already been lost.
