This picture shows the high country along the line between North Carolina and Tennessee, the rugged ground that later became the Great Smoky Mountains. In 1864 the Civil War was in its fourth year, and the region's steep ridges, narrow valleys, and few roads made it difficult for armies and civilians alike to move through. East Tennessee also held strong Unionist sentiment amid a largely Confederate South, which made the mountains politically as well as geographically significant. Images of this area from the period are worth looking at closely for what they reveal about how people of the time understood terrain that was still little known beyond its own valleys.
