The phrase "Land of the Sky" was a promotional nickname for the mountains of western North Carolina, and it grew popular after Christian Reid's 1875 novel of the same name drew attention to the Blue Ridge region around Asheville. Railroad extensions in the late 1800s brought summer visitors seeking cooler air, mineral springs, and resort hotels, and the region's booster literature treated its peaks, rivers, and lakes as a draw for health seekers and sightseers. The area that would become the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles the North Carolina and Tennessee line, was dedicated as a park in 1940 after years of land acquisition.
