Rather than a single portrait, this sheet pairs a likeness of William H. Vanderbilt with a view of the family tomb at New Dorp, Staten Island, which was drawn from the architect's plans. Vanderbilt, the railroad financier who had inherited the bulk of his father Cornelius Vanderbilt's fortune, died in December 1885, and *Harper's Weekly* published the engraving in its issue of December 19 that year. The portrait was based on a photograph by Bogardus, one of the leading New York studio photographers of the period, and the engraving was cut by T. A. Butler. Wood engravings like this one were how most readers saw photographs and architecture before halftone printing became common.
