Nantucket is an island about 30 miles off the coast, south of Cape Cod, so this view belongs to a place with its own history rather than the mainland peninsula. By 1881 the island's whaling fleet, which had made the town one of the richest in America in the mid-1800s, had largely vanished, and the economy was shifting toward summer visitors arriving by steamer. The record gives only the title and date, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of a town in transition, with its old maritime prosperity giving way to a new life built around tourism.
