Cape Cod in the decades after the Civil War was a region of fishermen, salt makers, and farmers, and its economy leaned on the sea and on cranberry bogs spreading through Barnstable County. The Cape Cod Railroad had reached Sandwich and Hyannis by the 1850s, linking villages that had long depended on coastal schooners. By the 1880s, summer visitors from Boston were arriving by rail and steamer, while many young men left for whaling ports and factory jobs elsewhere. Residents would have known the Cape for its shifting dunes, its lighthouses, and the wind-swept roads that connected one village to the next.
