Around 1845, Massachusetts was in the middle of the industrial and commercial expansion that defined the decade, and the Cape Cod towns sat at its quieter edge. Coastal fishing, salt making, and shipping still supported many families, though the region's whaling fleets were past their peak. Inland from the shore, the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, founded in 1825, was among the area's best-known manufacturers, and the first rails of the Cape Cod Railroad would reach Sandwich in 1848, opening the peninsula to Boston markets. Churches, town meetings, and militia musters gave village life its shape, and residents of the Cape would have known their towns mainly by the sea, the salt works, and the coming railroad.
