Cape Cod in the late nineteenth century was a peninsula of small harbor towns, salt works, and farms on thin sandy soil, and the view shows it as residents knew it. Railroad lines reaching the Cape in the 1850s and 1870s carried freight such as fish and cranberries to Boston markets and brought the first summer visitors. Cod fishing and coastal shipping had long sustained ports like Provincetown and Chatham, but both were losing ground as fleets shrank and cranberry bogs and the resort trade grew in importance. People in towns such as Barnstable and Yarmouth organized their days around the tides, the weather on the bogs, and the arrival of the afternoon train.
