Cape Cod in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was a peninsula of harbor towns whose living still came mostly from the sea and the land. Cod, mackerel and herring fishing kept wharves busy from Provincetown to Woods Hole, while salt works, cranberry bogs and coastal schooner trade gave the Bay and Sound towns steady work. The railroad's Cape line, which reached Provincetown in 1873, tied villages to Boston and began drawing summer visitors to boarding houses and shore cottages. Residents of these years knew the Cape as a place of sea captains, fishermen and farmers, and proposals to cut a canal across the narrow neck of land were a subject of long debate.
